OUR AKUNK

The village of Akunk is located in the Vardenis district of the Gegharkunik region, adjacent to the city of Vardenis from the south. It is located 86 km from the center of the Gavar region. The village, known for its numerous cold springs, was once also called Akner.

As a place of residence, the village has been known for a long time. A Bronze Age settlement; a castle of the VI-lV centuries BC, traces of cyclopean fortresses and even tombs were discovered on its territory. In the VI century BC a place called Klor Dar became considered a settlement of the III century.

The village is distinguished not only by its beautiful environment, yet also by the endurance and patriotism of the inhabitants. Throughout history, the village has stood the test of time. According to reports, it has been inhabited by Armenians since 1873. The inhabitants of the village today are descendants of Eastern Armenian immigrants from the village of Karakend in the Western Armenian province of Bayezet. They settled in the village of Karmirgyugh in the Gavar region in 1828-30. However, several families continued on their way and established a new settlement, renamed Akunk in 1935. Akunk took part in the Patriotic War and resulted in 106 victims. Many residents of Akunk were participants in the heroic battles of Artsakh.

After the 44-day war in 2020, the village became a border village. This circumstance presented new challenges for the inhabitants of Akunk.Yet, thanks to their unity, the inhabitants were able to encounter and build a former settlement, living a life of full-fledged labor filled with spirit and culture.
